10,000 students from local schools register in record time to visit CWSF
EDMONTON, March 8, 2023 – Some 10,000 students from across Edmonton and neighbouring regions have registered, in record speed, to attend the Canada-Wide Science Fair, May 17 to 19, at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Youth Science Canada, organizers of the country’s largest annual youth STEM event, opened registration only a few months ago. Through the generous support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s PromoScience program, Youth Science Canada is providing over 200 bus subsidies, financially supporting over 10,000 students and their teachers to visit CWSF.
“Interest in STEM is building at record-breaking levels,” says Reni Barlow, executive director at Youth Science Canada. “Regional fairs are kicking off next month and it’s evident that students and teachers are deeply interested in learning more about the amazing projects and inventive solutions and discoveries our student finalists will showcase to all this May. We can’t wait to welcome them all on the first public viewing day on May 17.”
To offset the event’s carbon footprint, Youth Science Canada is working with the Edmonton Convention Centre to implement elements of its Responsible Events Program. YSC announces it will take part in the Second Helping program through which, during the week of Canada-Wide, leftover meals from the convention centre will be donated to local food banks. Throughout CWSF, students and visitors will be encouraged to bring and donate non-perishable food items for local food banks. YSC will also take part in the Stems from the Heart program where flower arrangements from the award ceremony will be repurposed and donated, providing the bouquets a second life. Finally, supplies and event materials will be given to local schools within Edmonton and the greater area.
“It is important for Youth Science Canada to make sure that the right measures are taken to minimize our collective impact,” says Julia McDevitt, Canada-Wide Science Fair director. “The Responsible Events Program allows us to host an amazing event while making every effort to keep it carbon neutral, which is especially important given the number of visitors and exhibitors that will attend both the CWSF and the STEM Expo during the week.”
Registration is still open for exhibitors at the 2023 STEM Expo, Canada’s largest youth STEM event, occurring annually during CWSF. This event grants exhibitors from the private and public sectors the opportunity to showcase STEM innovation and technologies to interested youth. This year’s exhibitors include Cenovus Energy, TELUS Communications, University of Alberta, Best Buy, Health Canada, Royal Canadian Air Force, among other STEM organizations and institutions. STEM-related organizations are encouraged to sign up at youthscience.ca/STEM-Expo-Exhibitor.
