I have been involved in the science fair movement, and have been a promoter of STEM education, my entire teaching career. As a teacher, my students completed science fair projects. Later I became involved behind the scenes as a member of the Eastern Newfoundland Science Fairs Council and as a judge at school fairs.
My experience with other boards and organizations, has given me an excellent understanding of the non-profit sector, governance practice, and the fiduciary responsibilities of board members. This skillset will support the goals and mission of Youth Science Canada.
It is well known that Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are underrepresented in both scientific research and in STEM careers. Science and STEM projects have great potential for engaging youth in their education and helping them to see their future career possibilities. I believe the science fair movement can help address this disparity.
